In November we will be reading the play "The Crucible," by renown playwright Arthur Miller. The themes of religious intolerance; the union of church and state; reputation; vengeance; and social status will be explored, Students will be assigned reading parts to be read aloud in class. Assessment will consist of a literature lab; a student assessment on the cause of the Salem Witch Hunt; and a poster project regarding character and conflict in the play. Enjoy!
Originally published in 1973, Woman of Labrador is Elizabeth Goudie's enduring and candid story of her pioneering life as a trapper's wife in the early 1900s. She was left alone much of the year to rear eight children while her husband worked the traplines, providing furs for their meagre income. Independent and resourceful, Elizabeth filled multiple roles as homemaker, doctor, cook, hunter, shoemaker, and seamstress for her growing family.
In December students read the classic tale of Christmas joy, and gratitude, A Christmas Carol. In groups students completed a creative illustration of the themes, characters, important quote s and scenes from the story in the form of a Bloom Ball.
The Epic of Gilgamesh
In January and February we read the Epic of Gilgamesh. The Epic of Gilgamesh is a poem from ancient Mesopotamia that is often regarded as the earliest surviving great work of literature! Key thematic concepts covered are civilization, power, friendship, mortality and immortality! Students completed storyboards summarizing the epic and did an short in class assessment on Gilgamesh's Lament.
Frankenstein- Mary Shelley
Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley that tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a grotesque but sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.
In this unit there will be a comprehensive test and an analytical essay examining the key themes in the novel of humanity, evil, the advancements of science and technology, knowledge, secrecy, and what is true monstrosity.
